Western Illinois track and field completed another terrific outdoor season. The Leathernecks hope the experience and momentum gained over the past few weeks will carry to Tulsa, Okla., where they will compete in the 2022 Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships from Thursday (May 12) through Saturday (May 14). Fans can view the full three-day schedule here.

Words From Brokaw | "This is going to be a fun Championship. We have a great group of student-athletes representing the program and I'm excited to see how much we have improved since the Summit League Indoor Championships nearly three months ago," said Head Coach Trey Brokaw. "Weather will play a factor. Tulsa will be hot and I'm glad we had a few hot days at the start of the week to help us get acclimated. It will be interesting to see how other schools will fair with the drastic shift in climate. Our group is prepared mentally and physically so I'm confident they will handle the heat well. We've had tough weather and have focused on competing all season. For that reason, we should fare better than projected on paper."

"Individually, I'm excited to see what the various event groups can do. Zwandi Harrison, Briza Duré, and Kenyon'TA Skinner are all sitting in a position to potentially make a final in the 100 and/or 200. Jasmine Stokes has been improving steadily all season and I believe she's saved her best for this weekend in the hammer throw. Logan Lommel in the steeplechase and 1500, Paulina Wuestefeld in the 1500, and Ackeen Colley in the 800 are all knocking on the door of breaking the WIU school record in their events. That will be a lot of fun to watch, and I fully believe they are capable of it."

"Madison Trevena and Olin Ortiz will start the weekend off for us in the 10,000 meter run Thursday morning at 8:00am. They've put in a lot of volume over the past year leading up to this race. They are very prepared, and I believe both runners have the ability to place top-8 and score points for the team. Most exciting for me will be watching our seniors compete for, potentially, the last time in a WIU uniform. They've been great representatives of our program and my wish for them is that they can go out with a big personal best; what better place to do that than the Summit League Championships."

Colley Looks To Defend Title | Much attention will be centered on Ackeen Colley, as he looks to repeat as the Summit League outdoor 800m champion. Colley took the 800m win in Vermillion last season with a time of 1:51.75. A win during this year's championships would give Colley his fourth 800m title. Colley has also won the past two 800m races at the indoor championships.

Colley had another historic outdoor season, which was highlighted by an 800m victory at the Drake Relays. His huge win in Des Moines helped him earn his second career Summit League Outdoor Athlete of the Week award. His 800m time at Drake is the fastest 800m by a Summit League athlete this season.

Other 800m Runners | Colley is one of many Leathernecks to keep an eye on in this year's 800m race. Richard Brown and Lucas Hofer look to finish in the top five as they did during last season's outdoor championships. Brown took third overall with a time of 1:53.95, and Hofer took fourth with a time of 1:50.13.

Freshman Maleigha Huston begins her quest for an 800m collegiate win. The 2021 IHSA 1A 800m State Champion set a new personal 800m best at the Dr. Tucker Open at 2:13.68 to place third. Huston's time is currently the 13th fastest in the Summit League.

Wuestefeld and Lommel Looking For Wins | Paulina Wuestefeld was dominant in the 1500m during the outdoor season. In five 1500m races this season, Wuestefeld finished with a first-place finish, two second-place finishes, and a fourth-place finish during her senior campaign. She also set a new career-best at the Musco Twilight Invitational with a time of 4:34.27, which she'll look to beat to have a first-place finish in Tulsa.

Logan Lommel has competed in two 3000m steeplechases this season and took second and fourth place in his two races during the regular season. Lommel set the seventh-fastest time in program history at the 2022 Kip Janvrin Invitational with a time of 9:25.28, which also stands as the ninth-fastest time in the Summit League this season.
