Fochs Pitches Complete Game In Game Two Of Doubleheader

Western Illinois split Saturday's doubleheader with South Dakota State.

BROOKINGS, S.D.- Western Illinois baseball (2-6, 4-23) played a road doubleheader on Saturday (April 9) against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (4-4, 10-16). South Dakota State used an excellent performance from their starter in game one for a 4-3 win, but Chandler Fochs was lights out in game two for Western Illinois to claim game two for the Leathernecks 5-2.

Game One: South Dakota State 4, Western Illinois 3

The Jackrabbits began game one with a bang, using a two-run home run to take an early 2-0 lead in the first. In the bottom of the third, a walk, stolen base, and fielder's choice gave the Jackrabbits a runner on third. A groundout brought in South Dakota State's third run to take a 3-0 lead. An RBI double in the bottom of the fifth gave the Jackrabbits a 4-0 lead.

South Dakota State's starter retired WIU's first 11 hitters before a two-out single from Dillon Sears gave the Leathernecks their first base runner of the game. Sears got his second hit of the game in the seventh with a double down the right-field line. Gage Cruz drew a two-out walk to put another runner on, but a flyout got SDSU out of the seventh.

In the eighth, South Dakota State went to the bullpen, and the move helped the Leathernecks get on the board. Sam Maddox led the inning off with a single to right and scored on a double from Adam Juran to get Western Illinois on the board. After Juran advanced to third on a single from Nick Mitchell, Juran scored on a throwing error on a stolen base attempt to get WIU back within two. Another error by the Jackrabbits scored Mitchell to cut the Jackrabbits' lead down to one. Caden Kratz put down the Jackrabbits 1-2-3 in the eighth to keep it a one-run heading to the ninth.

Western Illinois advanced a runner to third in the ninth but couldn't find a way to tie the game, allowing the Jackrabbits to take game one.

Dillon Sears had the top hitting performance in game one, going 2-3 with a double and a walk. Adam Juran had the lone RBI of the game with his RBI double in the eighth.

Jack Bell and Caden Kratz pitched a shutout inning each out the bullpen.

Game Two: Western Illinois 5, South Dakota State 2

Game two was all about Chandler Fochs. The right-hander pitched the first complete game of the season for Western Illinois, going nine innings, allowing two runs, five hits, and struck out five. The Wausau, Wis., native didn't allow a baserunner in five of his nine innings to earn his fourth career victory.

Western Illinois got on the board first in game two with a run in the third. Adam Juran led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. A sacrifice bunt from Derek Botaletto advanced him to third, and he scored on a groundout from Nick Mitchell to put WIU up 1-0. South Dakota State led their half of the third off with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.

Western Illinois responded in the fourth, getting a single from Dillon Sears and a walk from Kory Olsen to put a pair of runners on with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt from Toby Allred, Diego Munoz drove in Sears on a sacrifice fly to give WIU a 2-1 advantage. South Dakota State led the bottom of the fourth off with back-to-back doubles and later used a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.

The Leathernecks started the sixth off with back-to-back singles from Sears and Olsen to put runners on the corners. Olsen stole second to put two in scoring position with Munoz up to bat. Munoz came up clutch with a single down the left-field line to score both baserunners and put Western Illinois up 4-2. Munoz added another run in the eighth by scoring on a wild pitch to give the Leathernecks a three-run cushion. Fochs sent the final six hitters down with no problem to seal the deal for the win.

Diego Munoz was once again the story offensively for Western Illinois in the second matchup. Munoz went 1-2 with three RBIs and a run scored. His three RBI day gives him his third career three-run game. Munoz now has five RBIs in his past three games.

Munoz didn't do it alone; three other Leathernecks ended with multiple hits in the game two victory. Dillon Sears went 2-4 with a walk, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Kory Olsen went 2-4 with a walk, run scored, and a stolen base, and Adam Juran batted 2-3 with a walk and a run scored.

The series finale versus South Dakota State takes place tomorrow (April 10) at 1 p.m. CT.
