Big Innings Hurt Leathernecks In Finale

A four and seven-run inning by South Dakota State helped them take game three in seven innings.

BROOKINGS, S.D.- Western Illinois Baseball (2-7, 4-24) fell in the series finale to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (5-4, 11-16) by a final score of 12-1 in seven innings. Although the score showed a big win for the Jackrabbits, it was a closer contest than advertised. The game was tied 1-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth, but a four-run sixth and seven-run seventh helped the Jackrabbits take game three.

South Dakota State struck first in the bottom of the second, leading the inning off with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead. Western Illinois tied the game later in the top of the fifth, stating things off with a one-out double from Sam Maddox and a single from Derek Botaletto put runners on the corners. Nick Mitchell drove in Maddox on a single to left to tie the game at 1-1. WIU still had two runners on, but a strikeout and fly-out to center got SDSU out of the inning with the game still tied.

Brian Raymond worked around a pair of baserunners in the bottom of the fifth to complete his fifth inning of work, and the Leathernecks then went to the bullpen in the sixth. The Jackrabbits had a runner on first with two outs but hit back-to-back home runs to score three runs and take a 4-1 lead. After another pitching change by Western Illinois, a single and stolen base set up another run on an RBI single, allowing SDSU to score their fourth run of the inning.

South Dakota State loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, and back-to-back singles brought in three more runs to allow the Jackrabbits to bust the game open. After a hit by pitch loaded the bases, a grand slam ended the game.

Brian Raymond did his part in his sixth start of the season. Raymond tied his season-high with five innings pitched, allowed just one run, three hits, and tied his season-high with six K's.

Nick Mitchell provided the Leathernecks with their lone run and extended his hitting streak to eight games, finishing 2-4. Derek Botaletto and Gage Cruz also ended with two hits each. Diego Munoz and Sam Maddox both provided a double in Sunday's contest.

Western Illinois will be back on Tuesday (April 12) for a single-game matchup with the Missouri Tigers. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.
