Early Momentum Not Enough Versus Missouri

Missed opportunities led to a 9-1 loss in Columbia.

COLUMBIA, MO.- Western Illinois baseball (4-25) dropped its Tuesday matchup to the Missouri Tigers (19-11) by a final score of 9-1. Western Illinois had multiple scoring opportunities throughout the game but only managed the one run.

Western Illinois loaded the bases with a pair of hits and a walk to begin the game, but a double play took away an opportunity to gain an early lead. A double play did help Western Illinois get out of the first inning after a pair of singles by Missouri to keep the game even at 0-0.

Missouri didn't stay scoreless for long, however. Four hits in the bottom of the second scored a pair for the Tigers to give them a 2-0 lead. Jake Armstrong managed to pitch his way around a leadoff double in the third to keep the deficit at two.

The Leathernecks had runners on second and third in the top of the fourth, but a close strikeout call went Missouri's way to end the inning with no runs. WIU went with a new arm to begin the fourth, but Missouri loaded the bases with a double, walk, and an infield single. A wild pitch brought in Missouri's third run of the contest, but the real damage was done on a three-run home run to dead center, putting the Tigers ahead 6-0.

Missouri began the bottom of the sixth with three straight hits to drive in two more runs to gain an eight-run advantage. Another single two batters later brought another man home for Missouri to take a 9-0 lead.

Western Illinois loaded the bases again in the seventh and got a run from a Derek Botaletto groundout to score Chase VanDerGinst for their lone run of the game.

Chase VanDerGinst had a big day in Columbia, finishing a perfect 3-3 with a run scored. VanDerGinst entered the game with just two hits all season. Nick Mitchell ended 1-4 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Mitchell's nine-game streak is tied as the longest hitting streak by a Leatherneck this season. Kyle Rosenfeld gave Western Illinois two shutout innings out of the bullpen, allowing just a hit and a walk.

Western Illinois begins a seven-game homestand this weekend with a three-game series against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles. First pitch for Friday is set for 3 p.m.
