WIU Softball Falls in Doubleheader

Leathernecks kept it close and went to extra innings in game two, braving extreme winds in the process.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Saturday (April 23), falling 4-0 and 4-3 in two games played against the Kansas City Roos. Saturday's doubleheader marked the final road game of the Leathernecks' 2022 Summit League schedule.

Game one: WIU 0 – 4 UMKC
Abby Carlin started in game one and pitched her ninth complete game of the season, allowing five hits and four runs (one earned) while striking out five across six innings of work. Carlin struck out Roos in four of six innings, getting two Roos down swinging in the sixth inning alone.

The offense finished with four hits in the game, as Savannah Rodriguez, Ami Ill and Bella Alvarez all singled throughout game one. Rodriguez managed two hits of her own, her fifth multi-hit performance of the 2022 season.

Game two: Leathernecks 3 – 4 Roos (Final/8)
After recording two hits in game one it was Savannah Rodriguez who started in the circle for game two. The Woodridge, Ill., native made her longest appearance of the season, pitching seven innings and allowing eight hits, three runs and two earned runs while striking out two. The game was tied after seven and Emily Price came on for the eighth.

The Western offense generated seven hits and three runs in game two, taking an early lead after Bella Alvarez singled down the right field line to score Ami Ill. Kayla Zamora crossed the plate to double Western's lead in the second inning, scoring off a Kaylee Ketcherside single up the middle. After Kansas City found two runs in the fifth inning, Ami Ill and Ketcherside came up big for Western Illinois in the seventh. Ill lead the inning off with a triple to deep left field, and Ketcherside stepped up with an RBI single to left in the next at-bat to give Western a 3-2 lead.

Kansas City would score with one out in the bottom of the seventh and walked it off with an RBI single up the middle in the eighth inning.

The Leathernecks are back in action on Sunday (April 24), playing the series finale at 11 a.m.
