Leatherneck Softball Wins in Extras

Carlin struck out 13 as two late-game base hits led Western to victory.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Sunday (April 24), defeating the Kansas City Roos 4-2 in a game that took two extra innings of action to complete. Western Illinois finishes the series with momentum heading into next weekend's home series against South Dakota.

Abby Carlin started in the circle and pitched a fantastic game, going all 10 innings and allowing eight hits, two runs (two earned) while striking out 13. Carlin's 13-strikeout performance was the second-best total of her Leatherneck career, and Saturday's performance marks her second game with double-digit strikeouts this season.

Western's offense was fueled by late-game production, as all four runs came in the seventh inning or later. After Piper Foote walked and Georgia Rea got on after an error by the UMKC shortstop, Abrianna Gracia stepped into the box for Western and delivered with a pinch-hit single up the middle to score Foote and Rea, tying the game at two apiece in the top of the seventh. Western did not score in the eighth or ninth innings, but a Jorja Hudson single with the bases loaded to drive in two runs in the tenth to build a 4-2 lead for the Leathernecks. Carlin came back into the game for the bottom of the inning and shut the door, completing the 4-2 victory.

Led by Ami Ill's 2-4 day, seven Western Illinois batters combined for eight hits. Savannah Rodriguez hit a double to left center in the fourth, with Kaylee Ketcherside, Georgia Rea and Torince Muczynski also recording hits in the game. Bella Alvarez walked in the seventh inning, loading the bases before Gracia's single.

The Leathernecks are back in action next Saturday (April 30), hosting South Dakota for a doubleheader at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. First pitches are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
