Leatherneck Bats Heat Up in Loss to USD
Bella Alvarez, Savannah Rodriguez and Georgia Rea all homered against the Coyotes.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Saturday (April 30), dropping a pair of games to the South Dakota Coyotes. Western  Illinois did see its bats come alive during game two, but it wasn't enough as USD held on to win.

Game one: WIU 0 – 9 USD (final/5)
South Dakota jumped on Abby Carlin early, scoring four runs in the game's first three innings, and later used a three-run home run to extend their lead to eight. Carlin pitched three innings in the game, striking out two while allowing seven hits and four runs (four earned). Maddy Anderson came on in relief for the game's final two innings, giving up six hits and striking out three in two innings of work.

Western's offense struggled in game one, as hits by Kaylee Ketcherside and Bella Alvarez represented the only baserunners put on by the Leathernecks. The defense did come up with several key plays, however, as Carlin caught one Coyote attempting to steal with a nice throw to third, where Bella Alvarez placed the tag and got the out.

Game two: Western Illinois 7 – 8 South Dakota
The Coyotes took an early lead in game two thanks to a first-inning sacrifice fly and second-inning home run, but the Leatherneck offense kept things competitive. Two runs scored in the second inning when Gab Drager walked with the bases loaded, and Jorja Hudson soon scored form third on a wild pitch, bringing the deficit to just 3-2.

USD added more runs in the third, but Bella Alvarez responded with her first home run of the season, scoring Savannah Rodriguez on a third-inning shot to left center. Rodriguez would find some power of her own two innings later, smacking a solo shot to left field in the fifth inning to cut into the Coyote lead. After USD found one more run to build an 8-5 lead, Georgia Rea got ahold of a pitch and sent it over the wall in deep left for a two-run home run that brought Western to within a single run. Western, however, couldn't capitalize on the momentum and the game went final at 8-7.

Rodriguez and Rea both went 2-4 as five other Leathernecks recorded this in the game; Western finished with nine in the game. Torince Muczynski found her way on base with a walk, and Gab Drager was credited with an RBI after earning that second-inning base on balls. Piper Foote also found her way on base after being hit by a pitch during her sixth-inning pinch-hit at-bat. Emily Price had a strong showing in the circle for Western Illinois, pitching four innings in relief and allowing five hits and two runs (two earned) while striking out three.

Western Illinois is back in action on Sunday (May 1), playing the series finale at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
