Leathernecks Fall 5-2

Western Illinois softball drops series finale to USD, faces Illinois on Wednesday.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Sunday (May 1), falling 5-2 to the South Dakota Coyotes. Sunday's game was the series finale, and the Leathernecks now have a quick turnaround as they face Illinois on Wednesday (May 4).

Abby Carlin started in the circle and threw all seven innings, allowing eleven hits and five runs (four earned). The Buxley, Iowa native did strike out nine, marking her fifth game this season with nine or more strikeouts, and Sunday's performance was her 11th complete game.

Western's offense scored early in the Sunday matchup, with Jorja Hudson smacking a ball through the right side of the infield for a first-inning single with the bases loaded. Two Leathernecks scored and Western took an early one-run advantage, and Hudson recorded her second hit in as many games. WIU's offense continued to produce throughout the game, as seven different players combined for eight hits with Bella Alvarez recording her first multi-hit game of the season. The Leathernecks stranded 10 baserunners across the seven-inning matchup.

The Leathernecks are back in action on Wednesday (May 4), traveling to Urbana, Ill., to face the University of Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
