Western Illinois hosts Omaha in regular season finale this weekend.

Box Score URBANA, Ill. – The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck softball team played on Wednesday (May 4), falling 8-0 in a five-inning matchup against the University of Illinois. Wednesday's contest was the final regular-season road and non-conference matchup, setting the stage for a weekend series with Omaha.

Savannah Rodriguez started in the circle for Western Illinois and pitched the first four innings, allowing six runs (five earned) and five hits while forcing the Illini batters into ten ground outs. Emily Price also came in to pitch in the fifth, allowing two hits and two runs. Western's defense struggled against the potent Illinois offense, committing five errors.

After not getting on base in the first matchup of the season played back in February, Western's offense did create some opportunities in this game. Kaylee Ketcherside got on with a hit in the first inning, and found her way into scoring position later in the inning after Bella Alvarez singled through the left side. Savannah Rodriguez led off the fourth inning with a double to left center, and later advanced on a single by Torince Muczynski. Despite creating chances, the Leatherneck offense was unable to score.

Western is back in action this weekend, facing the Omaha Mavericks in a series with Summit League Tournament implications that will conclude the regular season.
