WIU nearly rally past NKU

Leathernecks fall at Northern Kentucky

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Kent. -- The Western Illinois softball team dropped a 4-2 contest to Northern Kentucky on Tuesday afternoon on their spring break road trip through Kentucky.
After falling behind 3-0 after four innings, the Leathernecks tried to rally back against the Norse.
Kaylee Ketcherside reached base, then after an out, Georgia Rea cut the deficit to 3-2 with a two-run home run to center.
Western continued to threaten but could not plate the game-tying run in the fifth.
The Norse answered back, getting a home run themselves to take a 4-2 lead after five.
In the sixth, WIU did get the tying run on base after a Gabriela Drager single and a Torince Muczynski walk but the Leathernecks could not get the runners home.
Western did not get the tying run to the plate in the seventh.
The Leathernecks had a strong star to the game, getting a triple from Ami Ill in the top of the first but left her stranded on third.
Northern Kentucky used that as momentum, taking the lead for good with a single run in the bottom of the first.
After a scoreless second inning, Northern Kentucky extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third, plating two runs.
Rea led WIU with a pair of RBI while Ill had two hits.
In 4.1 innings of relief, Abby Carlin had five strikeouts and allowed three runs (two earned).
Emily Price allowed a run while striking out two in 1.2 innings.
The Leathernecks are back in action on Wednesday, taking on Louisville.
First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
