Women’s Golf Set To Battle Pair Of Conference Opponents In Upcoming Invitational

Western Illinois women's golf heads to Sugarland, Texas, for its fourth spring season tournament. They will compete in the Houston Baptist University Husky Intercollegiate Invitational, hosted by Houston Baptist. The Leathernecks will compete in the two-day event from Monday (March 14) through Tuesday (March 15) at Riverbend Country Club, a par-72, 6084-yard course.
 
Words From Coach Lia | "The team is excited to participate in the HBU Husky Invitational for the first time. Riverbend Country Club is a fantastic venue and will be a challenge," said WIU Director of Golf Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "It has gone through several renovations and is well bunkered with fast greens. This will be a test for our irons and putting, and we are looking forward to it."
 
Start Times | The teams will have shotgun start times at 8:30 a.m. CT on both Monday and Tuesday.
 
Recapping Benbow | Women's golf competed last week in the Benbow Collegiate and placed 11th with a score of +83 over par (651). Katie Tanner had the top performance for WIU, scoring +16 over par (158) to place t-28th. Tanner's top round was in round two, where she scored +7 over par with a birdie.
 
Scouting the Opponents | Western Illinois will be one of 15 teams competing in Sugarland and one of three representatives of the Summit League. WIU will battle alongside Omaha, and South Dakota for a preview of their conference opponents. Other competition will consist of host Houston Baptist, Austin Peay, Bowling Green, Creighton, Lamar, Sam Houston, Tarleton State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christian, USC Upstate, UTEP, UT Arlington, and UT Rio Grande Valley.
 
Western Illinois saw Bowling Green in their opening invitational of the spring in the Mid-American Match Play Challenge.

Up Next | Women's golf won't be back competing until April when they compete in the Redbird Invitational, hosted by Illinois State. The invitational takes place April 8-9 in Normal, Ill.
