Cold Shooting Hurts WIU in Loss at NDSU

Leathernecks turn it around quickly, face North Dakota tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in second game of Summit League action.

FARGO, N.D. – Western Illinois women's basketball played Monday night (Dec. 19), falling to the North Dakota State Bison 84-60 at the Scheels Center in Fargo, N.D. The result moves Western to 5-7 on the season ahead of a matchup against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks that was moved up 24 hours due to impending weather; the teams will now match up in Grand Forks tomorrow night at 7 p.m.
 
The Leathernecks kept things close early, with Carla Flores sinking a three mid-way through the first quarter to bring the game to within four points at 13-9 in favor of NDSU. After the Bison took a 23-15 lead into the quarter break, Zareia Chevre opened the second quarter by making a shot through contact that kept the Bison lead within six. NDSU got hot, however, and used an 18-33 (55%) first half shooting effort to take a 45-30 into the halftime break.
 
Western Illinois would not go down easy, however, cutting into the NDSU lead mid-way through the third quarter. After the Bison grew the lead to 19 with 5:51 in the quarter, Western went on a 9-0 run that was capped off with a triple by Addi Brownfield to bring the Leathernecks within 10 points. NDSU responded with a 12-3 run and then outscored Western 14-9 in the final period of action to take the 84-60 victory.
 
Anna Deets led all scorers with 16 points, making 4-9 from the field and sinking a career-high seven shots at the line. Jada Thorpe scored 15 and grabbed five boards while Zareia Chevre and Carla Flores both scored six; Alissa Dins grabbed eight rebounds and blocked a career-high three shots while Kennedy Flanagan finished with two points and seven rebounds in 15 minutes of action. All 13 players on the Western Illinois roster checked into the game with 10 recording at least two points.
 
WIU struggled from the field, shooting 26% for the game and 4-24 from deep, but found some success at the free throw line, making 26-29 attempts – good for a conversion rate of 90%. The team forced 15 Bison turnovers and converted those into 13 points, while scoring 20 in the paint and 10 second chance points; the bench contributed 17.
 
Western is back in action tomorrow night in Grand Forks, N.D., facing the North Dakota Fighting Hawks.
