Leathernecks Make Season-High 26 Free Throws in Loss

Kennedy Flanagan blocked a career-high three shots, Western is back in action this Saturday (Dec. 3).

MACOMB, Ill. – Leatherneck women's basketball was in action Wednesday night (Nov. 30), hosting the Tarleton State Texans at Western Hall in a game that finished 84-69 in favor of the visitors. Multiple players set new career-best marks as Western plays host to Eureka College this Saturday (Dec. 3) at 12 p.m.

"I thought we got a lot of good shots early and just didn't make them while they knocked down everything and it just set the tone. The big positive is that this game made us work on some things and deal with some things, and I thought in the second half we did a better job of handling their pressure and getting some movement offensively," head coach JD Gravina said. "Our ball movement and movement without the ball was as good as it's been all year. Again, headed in the right direction."

After the Texans came out firing and built an 11-point advantage with 4:38 remaining in the first, Western Illinois found some rhythm offensively and finished the first quarter on a 10-0 run that brought the score to 13-12 after 10 minutes of action. Tarleton State's offense found its groove and poured in 29 second quarter points, and Western trailed 42-24 at the break.

"We started off with that run, cut into their lead pretty early. They just got some momentum, and you know basketball is a game of runs so I think they just shot it really well," guard Jada Thorpe said. "I think we all played hard… we just have to do better on defense but we'll be okay."

The Leatherneck offense came to life during the third quarter, scoring 26 points and finding a great rhythm at the line, making 10-straight free throws and finishing the quarter 13-14. Elizabeth Lutz put the cherry on top with a buzzer-beating three pointer as Western trailed 64-50 after three. Alissa Dins brought the game to within 12 with a bucket on the opening possession of the fourth, but the TSU defense was able to stave off the Leatherneck offense as the Texans were victorious, 84-69.

Thorpe led all Leatherneck scorers with 18 points, finishing 7-7 at the line while grabbing two rebounds and dishing out three assists. Just 10 days after scoring a career-high 12 against Chicago State, Zareia Chevre topped that with 15 points on 4-7 shooting from the field and 1-2 from deep, also hitting six shots at the line and grabbing six rebounds. Anna Deets scored seven as Addi Brownfield paired six points with five rebounds and an assist; Elizabeth Lutz scored six. Allie Meadows finished with a team-leading two steals while Kennedy Flanagan scored three points and grabbed six rebounds, also blocking a career-high three shots. Mallory McDermott grabbed a career-high five rebounds.

As a team, Western assisted on nine of the 18 made field goals, making a season-high 26 shots at the free throw line and seven shots from deep. The Leatherneck bench had another solid outing with 34 points as WIU scored 18 points in the paint and outscored the Texans in second-chance points, 10-6, and fast break points, 10-8.
