Western Drops Home Game to Jackrabbits

Angie Knies scored, Western heads to Denver and Omaha next weekend.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois women's soccer played Sunday afternoon (Oct. 9), hosting South Dakota State in a game that finished 4-1 in favor of the Jackrabbits. Angie Knies scored her first goal of the season as Western prepares for the final three games of the 2022 season.

Playing with the wind in the first half, Western was mere inches away from striking first in the 25th minute. After finding space in the final third, Hana Daoudi unleashed a rocket from distance that hit the woodwork in the upper left corner and bounced out. SDSU scored in the 31st and 45th minutes to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime.

In the 77th minute, Western got the goal it had been pushing for thanks to Angie Knies. After Sydnee Sagal won the ball in the midfield and played it forward, Knies unleashed a rocket from over 20 yards out that went into the far corner to cut SDSU's lead in half. The effort was Knies' first of the season and follows up Friday's assist, which was also her first of the year.

SDSU would strike twice in the final four minutes of action and the game went final at 4-1.

Western finished with five shots in the game (three on target), drawing four fouls and three offside calls as goalkeeper Isabel Navas Rodriguez made six saves. Emily Martins started and played all 90 minutes for the second consecutive game with Amy Andrews, Emmy Ellington, Sarah De Gannes, Olivia Heinert, Navas Rodriguez and Knies also playing the full 90.

Navas Rodriguez now leads the Summit League in total saves (76) and saves per game (5.43), while her .776 save percentage would be a career-best mark if the season ended today. Despite not scoring, Amy Andrews is still tied for the league-lead in goals (eight) while ranking second in points (17) and points per game (1.21). The team as a whole has kept things clean defensively, committing just 116 fouls this season – good for second-lowest in the league.

WIU is back in action next Friday (Oct. 14), heading to Denver before playing Omaha on Sunday (Oct. 16). Kickoffs are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
