Leathernecks Falter in Denver

Western faces Omaha in must-win game on Sunday.

DENVER, Colo. – Western Illinois women's soccer played Friday night (Oct. 14), falling 4-0 to the Denver Pioneers at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Despite a strong defensive effort for the first two-thirds of the game, Western conceded four times in the final 25 minutes of action, and will now turn its focus on a must-win matchup against the Omaha Mavericks on Sunday (Oct. 16).

With a starting eleven that featured regular starters such as Sarah De Gannes and Olivia Heinert, the Leathernecks put in a strong defensive effort during the first 45 minutes. Denver took six shots but was no match for Isabel Navas Rodriguez, who made four key saves to nullify the Pioneer attack; the game was level at zero after the first 45 minutes of action.

The WIU defense continued to hold strong for the first 20 minutes after the break but Denver found its breakthrough midway through the second, scoring twice in 37 seconds in the 66th and 67th minutes to take a 2-0 advantage. Denver added another in the 74th and again in the 84th to take a four-goal leadthat would hold until the final whistle.

Amy Andrews, Hana Daoudi and Angie Knies all recorded shots as 17 different Leathernecks appeared in the game. Western drew nine fouls and committed just seven, while the Denver offense was caught offside four times. Isabel Navas Rodriguez made seven total saves, increasing her Summit League-leading total to 83 on the season.
