Leathernecks Fall at Omaha

Western Illinois hosts St. Thomas next weekend in the season finale.

OMAHA, Neb. – Leatherneck women's soccer played on Sunday (Oct. 16), falling 3-0 in a road matchup against the Omaha Mavericks. Western is back in action for the season finale next Sunday, hosting St. Thomas at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

With an experienced starting eleven that featured graduate forward Amy Andrews and seniors Alex Bassen and Malerie Rohweder, Western fell behind early. A Maverick went down in the box on a corner kick in the fourth minute and UNO converted, before scoring four minutes later to take an early 2-0 advantage that would hold until halftime.

Omaha added another in the 55th minute, but Western's offense soon started to create some chances. In the 61st minute it looked like WIU was going to cut into Omaha's lead thanks to Sarah De Gannes, who's header on a corner kick bounced off the woodwork. De Gannes made two more attempts on goal during a scramble in the box that were saved. Neither team would score the rest of the way as the game went final at 3-0 in favor of the Mavericks.

De Gannes and the Leathernecks finished with eight shots, three of which were on target, while taking one corner kick and drawing nine Maverick fouls. 17 different players appeared in the game while seven played 75+ minutes, as goalkeeper Isabel Navas Rodriguez made eight saves in net.

Western is back at home for the final game of the regular season next Saturday (Oct. 23), hosting St. Thomas at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
