Leathernecks, Panthers Draw in Charleston

Kyle Owen scored his first of the season, Western hosts Lindenwood next Saturday.

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Western Illinois men's soccer played on Saturday (Oct. 8), playing the Panthers of Eastern Illinois to a 1-1 draw on the road. The Leathernecks have seven days before the next contest, hosting Summit League opponents Lindenwood University next Saturday (Oct. 15) at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

Armin Dedic was in the starting 11 for the first time in his collegiate career as Western Illinois got out to a fast start in this game, recording four shots in the first 10 minutes of action and forcing two saves. The Leatherneck offense would continue to pepper Eastern Illinois' goalkeeper, finishing the first 45 minutes with 10 shots (four on goal) and eight corner kicks, though the game was level at zero.

Eastern was the first to find a breakthrough, scoring in the 65th minute to take a one-goal advantage. That lead, however, did not last long, as Kyle Owen found the Western Illinois breakthrough five minutes later, taking a ball from Luis Rodrigues and putting his shot above the goalkeeper in the middle part of the goal with 20 minutes remaining. Western put two shots on target in the game's final five minutes but was unable to convert, and the game went final at 1-1.

Western Illinois finished with a season-high 19 shots, eight of which were on goal – also the highest mark of the season. The Leathernecks took 15 corner kicks to EIU's three and drew 11 fouls while the WIU defense limited EIU to just seven shots (four on goal), three corner kicks and four offside calls. Goalkeeper Alex Flowers made three saves while Owen led all players with six shots (three on goal), and Rodrigues' assist was his second of the season.

Arian Mehrang, Abdul Hypolite, Muazu Sagir and Marco Presta all recorded multiple shots in the contest. Flowers, Rodrigues, Mehrang, Oscar Olingdahl and Xavier Brown all played the full 90 minutes with Adam Miller making his first appearance off the bench since Sept. 2 against Fort Wayne.

Western is back in action next weekend, hosting Lindenwood on Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. before welcoming Detroit Mercy to Macomb the following Tuesday (Oct. 18) at 3 p.m.
