Previous matchup: Western Illinois and Loyola have played six times in program history, with the Leathernecks holding a 5-1 all-time record. The last time these two teams faced off was on Sept. 14, 1991, which was nearly six years before Dr. Eric Johnson joined the program.

Players to watch: Kyle Owen was named by the Summit League as a player to watch in the 2021 Fall season, with the announcement coming as part of an Aug. 24 release.

After a stellar preseason that saw him net two goals and assist on three in a trio of exhibition, Owen will look to carry his form into the rest of this season. The junior defender was Second Team All-Summit League last season after playing 90 minutes in each of his 13 appearances, scoring a goal and adding an assist. Named a captain for the 2021 season, Owen has three goals and an assist through 34 appearances (34 starts) in his Leatherneck career.

Alex Flowers had a career game in the team's last matchup against Fort Wayne, making a career-high six saves on 14 shots faced. Through three appearances this season, the sophomore goalkeeper has allowed four goals and his save percentage has improved over seven percent when compared to last season.

So far this season: Western is winless through four games, outshooting teams 50-42 with 17 shots on goal. They've taken 29 corner kicks and will look to break the scoring drought against Loyola Chicago.

Scouting the opponent: Loyola Chicago is currently 2-2 on the season and coming off back-to-back losses against Northwestern and Michigan. Billy Hency has scored three goals for the Ramblers, and Oscar Dueso leads them in assists with two. The team has a tendency to score early in games with five of their seven goals on the season coming in the first half, and they don't draw many corner kicks with nine taken through four games.

What's next: The Leathernecks are on the road again for their next matchup with Northern Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 18) at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex in Dekalb, Ill.
