MACOMB, Ill. — Junior midfielder George Frost scored twice and Marco Presta added a goal as Western Illinois rallied from an early deficit to defeat Quincy 3-2 on Saturday in the regular season opener.
Quincy struck first, but the Leathernecks responded with three unanswered goals to take control of the match. Presta leveled the score before Frost gave Western its first lead of the afternoon.
Frost later added his second goal from the penalty spot after Rashidi Ishibwami battled to win the penalty kick, putting the Leathernecks ahead 3-1.
"I think it was just the team working hard and chasing second balls, making runs. I think that made a big difference when those runs were being made, and we managed to find ourselves through on goal," Frost said. "On the first one, it just happened to get to Andrea, who was able to square it across for me to get my goal. On the other goal, it was just hard work by Rashidi. He battled and won the PK, which was pretty good from him, and I was lucky enough to be the one who put it away."
Quincy found the back of the net late to cut the deficit to one, but Western Illinois held on to secure the season-opening victory.
"It's the same thing we've been doing all preseason. It's just working hard in training every single day, making sure we stick together, keep pushing on and carry it into when we play," Frost said.
The Leathernecks return to action Thursday, Aug. 27 at 3PM, when they travel to DePaul.
