Leathernecks Versus Coyotes Preview

Previous matchup: Western Illinois and South Dakota have played 13 times in program history, with Western holding a 3-9-1 record all-time. The last matchup was an away loss on March 14, 2021.
 
Players to watch: In her fourth season with the Leathernecks, Zoe Clarke has found a home playing on the left side of the defense. The senior from Birmingham, England, has played in every game this season and made five starts.
 
"Zoe is a natural playing as a wingback. She opens up the game really well, works extremely hard, and provides a great partnership playing beside Angie Knies," associate head coach Josee Primeau said. "We're excited to see what else she has in store this season."
 
Emmy Ellington has made eight appearances and five starts in her first season at Western Illinois. In 311 minutes of action, and her one goal this season was the opener in WIU's 2-1 road victory at Valparaiso.
 
"Emmy has grown tremendously this season. She knew coming in as a freshman there would be a big jump but she's adjusted really well and is playing with more confidence," Primeau said. "She gives us good balance in the midfield."

So far this season: WIU women's soccer is currently in the midst of a seven-game unbeaten streak that includes six victories and three results from overtime games. It started with the 4-3 overtime win against Illinois State on Aug. 26, and the most recent result was a scoreless draw at Drake on Sept. 19. The team plays at South Dakota State on Friday before their Sunday game with USD.

Scouting the opponent: The Coyotes are 5-1-2 on the season, a record which features four home victories; their most recent was a 1-0 home win against Iowa State. Three players have scored multiple goals and their 'keepers have combined to save 18 out of 70 shots faced.

What's next: After Sunday's match at South Dakota, the Leathernecks will head home for two matchups with Omaha and Denver. Kickoff against Omaha is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 8) at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
