Leathernecks Win as Freshmen Score First Career Goals

Emmy Ellington and Kayla Turner scored as WIU women’s soccer extended their winning streak to four.

VALPARAISO, IND. - The Western Illinois University Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer team was in action for the first time this weekend on Friday (Sept. 10), defeating the Valparaiso Beacons 2-1 at Brown Field in Valparaiso, Ind.

Sporting an experienced starting eleven that featured the likes of Natalie Nagle and Lauryn Peters, it was a young Leatherneck who struck early. In the 27th minute Emmy Ellington got a look at goal and made no mistake with it, firing the Leathernecks into a lead just over halfway through the first period.

At half, the Leathernecks held the lead and also led the game in several statistical categories. They took seven shots (six on goal, four of which came from Amy Andrews) and attempted three corner kicks, forcing four saves out of the Beacons' goalkeeper. The team was only caught offsides on one occasion and drew six fouls.

In the second half Western continued to push, and Kayla Turner rewarded them with a second goal in the 80th minute, doubling the lead. Valparaiso would add a goal 16 seconds later to cut the lead in half, but the result would hold and the Leathernecks left Valparaiso as 2-1 victors.

In 90 minutes of action WIU out shot Valparaiso 16-7 (13-5 on goal), earning six corner kicks and drawing 16 fouls. Their offensive pressure led to the Beacons' goalkeeper finishing with ten saves and Isabel Navas Rodriguez made four saves on seven shots faced in net.

With the win the Leathernecks extended their winning streak to four games, including three road victories. Ellington and Turner both scored the first goals of their respective collegiate careers, and Ellington earned her first points in the process. Turner is now third on the team in total points with four, as she's got two assists to go with today's goal.

Leatherneck women's soccer is back in action on Sunday (Sept. 12), facing IUPUI in Macomb. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
