Errors prove fatal in Saturday’s loss

Trent Bauer, Tyler Estes, and Derek Botaletto each recorded a multi-hit game in the loss to Oral Roberts.

TULSA, Okla. - Saturday afternoon (May 8) didn't go quite as planned for the Western Illinois baseball team (10-25, 6-16). A day removed from splitting a doubleheader with Oral Roberts (22-19, 12-5), the Leathernecks fell, 9-1, to the Golden Eagles Sunday.

Another strong outing by Leatherneck pitching kept the score close for the first six innings. After allowing two hits and a run in the bottom of the first, lefty Brian Raymond was lights out; the junior had allowed just the one run off five hits through five innings, striking out two and surrendering no walks.

A perfectly executed double steal in the bottom of the third by Adam Juran and Luke Schwartz plated the only run of the afternoon for the Leathernecks, tying the game up at 1-1.

Three unearned Golden Eagle runs crossed in the bottom of the seventh inning to give ORU a 4-1 lead, a lead they wouldn't surrender for the rest of the game.

Raymond pitched seven full innings (tying his season-high) and Trent Bauer, Tyler Estes and Derek Botaletto each recorded a team-high two hits. It marked the 11th, fourth and eighth time that each of them has recorded a multi-hit game, respectively.

The series concludes in Tulsa Sunday (May 9) at 1 p.m.
