Reed, Stokes PR in Day One of Joey Haines Invite

The Leathernecks kicked off their outdoor season with collegiate bests.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - All eyes were on the hammer Friday (April 2), as the Western Illinois throws program kicked off the outdoor season at the Joey Haines Invite. The event was the only one on the agenda, and two Leathernecks, Morgan Reed and Jasmine Stokes, left with personal records.

Competing in her very first collegiate hammer event, Reed's progression improved with each throw. Her first toss traveled 34.15 meters before moving to 39.69 and 45.21.

Stokes ironically set her previous hammer PR at 43.64 meters at the 2019 Joey Haines Invite, and there must be something in the Missouri air, as she surpassed that measure twice. Her first attempt went 46.63 meters and the second 47.73.

The Leathernecks' track and field team return to the Abe Stuber Track & Field Complex Saturday for day two of the meet. Running events begin at 10 a.m. and field events will start an hour later.

Spectators are allowed to attend the Joey Haines Invite and are asked to wear masks and maintain social distancing.
