Walk-Off Splits Doubleheader Versus Oral Roberts

Western Illinois and Oral Roberts split the Friday (April 2) doubleheader, 9-8 and 10-0.

MACOMB, Ill. - It was a tale of two tapes in the Friday (April 2) doubleheader between Western Illinois (9-15, 5-6) and Oral Roberts (11-15, 4-5). The Leathernecks rallied and walked off to win game one 9-8, and the Golden Eagles took game two 10-0.

"The first game we showed our true grit. Toby Allred came up with another big knock and we just kept competing all game," head coach Andy Pascoe said. "Second game they just absolutely outplayed us, by far in every aspect of the game. Looking forward to seeing how we respond tomorrow with a chance to split a league series with a solid club."

Game 1 | Western Illinois 9, Oral Roberts 8

The Leathernecks continued their streak of come from behind victories in game one.

Both sides went back and forth as the game was tied three separate times before ORU took a four-run lead (8-4) in the eighth.

Western rallied and exploded for a five-run bottom of the ninth. Trenton Bauer led the Leathernecks at the plate and got things going with his career-high fourth hit, an RBI single to make it 5-8. The senior concluded his team-high on-base streak of 13 games.

Toby Allred stayed clutch on the afternoon - tied it 4-4 with a two-out hit in the 7th - and roped a bases-loaded clearing double to tie again 8-8. After a groundout moved the winning run to third, a wild pitch brought in Allred for the victory. The junior ended with a career-high four RBI.

Will Jaynes (1-0) earned his first career victory as he completed the eighth inning. Starter Jace Warkentien threw seven innings and was charged with three runs as he struck out five batters in back-to-back starts. The lefty has totaled 16 in the last three outings.

Game 2 | Western Illinois 0, Oral Roberts 10

The Golden Eagles controlled game two of the twin bill from the start as they scored eight runs through the first four innings.

Western scattered five hits, with Kevin Raisbeck continuing his on-base (13) and hit streak (9) and Alex Dorethy leading the way with two hits.

Jack Bell made his second appearance of the season and threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

The series finale is set for tomorrow at 1 p.m.
