Colley Named Player of the Week After Producing Historic Run

Ackeen Colley is now the Leathernecks’ indoor and outdoor titleholder in the 800-meter run.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - He intended to run as fast as he could - a school record, 'Top 10' spot on the 2021 NCAA Division I qualifying list, and the honor as the Summit League Outdoor Athlete of the Week followed.

Ackeen Colley is having an incredible debut season.

"I'm happy for Ackeen to be recognized for his great race," said WIU assistant coach Brandon Hazouri. "We were really grateful for the opportunity to get him down there to compete against some of the best athletes in the NCAA. He did an excellent job of taking advantage."

Ole Miss invited a few of the nation's best to compete in the Joe Walker Invite this past weekend, and Colley joined two other Western Illinois representatives in the men's 800-meter. The senior finished second in the race, and his time of 1:47.71 crowned his placement as the Leathernecks' indoor and outdoor record holder. The time also currently ranks ninth-best in all of Division I.

"We are honored to have Ackeen recognized for his performances during the indoor season, and now the second meet of the outdoor season," furthered head coach Diane Wholey. "He is a talented athlete who works diligently at his craft. The way his race unfolded at Ole Miss is a great representation of preparation meeting opportunity. Coach Hazouri does a great job with our distance runners. This was another special moment for Ackeen and a few of the 800m guys to shine."

Ackeen and his team return to action Friday and Saturday at Indiana State's Gibson Invitational.
