Western Falls to Undefeated SIU

The Leathernecks were defeated 1-9 in a midweek contest at Southern Illinois.

CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Western Illinois baseball team (1-3) traveled to in-state competition Southern Illinois (8-0) for the first midweek game of the season. The Salukis took the contest, 9-1

"We weren't dialed in today overall,"head coach Andy Pascoe said. "When we had opportunities to put some runs across, we didn't have productive at-bats while SIU was able to do that. Our offense has done an excellent job of getting us into scoring opportunities. Now we need to find a way to consistently drive in runs when those opportunities are presented. The good part from today is we played clean defensively, which has been a huge focus of ours."

After being retired in order in the first two innings, SIU, who owns the second-longest win streak in the country (13) - won the last five in 2020 - chipped away throughout the game, scoring in five of the last six innings.

The Leathernecks were only retired in order the first two frames and left 10 total runners on while just being outhit, 11-10.

Following the shortened 2020 season, Kevin Raisbeck was granted an extra year of eligibility, and the lefty has taken full advantage of it. He knocked his third hit in the ninth to record his 22nd career multi-hit game of his career and third of the season.

Fellow upperclassmen - Trenton Bauer and Alex Dorethy - also knocked multiple hits with two each and have recorded a hit in every game this season. Derek Botaletto brought in the WIU run with an RBI groundout after three straight singles in the fourth by Luke Schwartz, Bauer, and Dorethy.

Jack Bell, Gage Cruz, Jackson Gray, and Parker Heidorf all made their 2021 debuts this afternoon.  WIU heads to Evansville for a four-game series this weekend with the series opener on Friday at 3 p.m.
