Bringing Home Medals, Records, and Personal Awards

Western Illinois will leave the Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championships with six medals and league recognition.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Western Illinois track and field team is on its way home to Macomb from The Summit League Track & Field Championships presented by The U.S. Air Force Special Warfare. And in addition to storing their equipment and luggage, the Leathernecks are also toting six medals and two personal awards.

"There were some great highlights for our program today on the final day of the Summit League meet and a great follow up to Saturday's performances," said head coach Diane Wholey. "We had several student-athletes set personal best performances. I think as a staff and a team, we have to be very pleased with the fact that many elevated their game with PRs at one of the most important meets of the year."

Ackeen Colley ran like a man on a mission on his way to first place in the 800-meter final. The act will shakeup record books for Western Illinois and the Summit, as his 1:48.61-time broke his previous school record while also setting one for the championship meet.  Richard Brown placed third (1:51.37) in the eight-man event, and later the two created history in the 4x400 relay. Western's indoor 4x4 record previously sat untouched for 44 years until Lucas Hofer, Logan Lommel, Brown, and Colley's championship effort. The four-some earned a bronze medal with a record-setting time of 3:13.90 after finishing first in the distance medley relay a day prior.

Their DMR sits second all-time in Leatherneck indoor rankings (10:02.56).

For their overall performance, Brown was named the Newcomer of the Championship, while Colley was chosen as the Most Outstanding Championship Performer.

"That was a special day," exclaimed assistant coach Brandon Hazouri. "The 800 guys capped off their impressive indoor season and got it done in the final. For Ackeen to do what he did in a championship just shows what a competitor he is. We're hoping he's going to get a chance to do it again at the national meet soon. Richard and Hofer did a great job too. For Richard to run like he did, as a freshman, was fun to watch. He learned a lot, and I know it's only going to keep getting better for him. Hofer has been so fun to see grow this year. I was as happy for him as I was anybody to prove that he belongs in that race.

"Then for those guys to come back and do what they did in the 4x4, it just says a lot about what the relay events mean to them. I hope Logan gets the credit he deserves for this as well. I asked a lot of him this weekend, and he was coming in pretty tired from his previous weekend with the soccer team. He struggled a bit in some earlier events, so to see him rally back and have his lifetime best split in a 4x4 was so important to that run and really says a lot about Logan."

The women's team added to the historic day, medaling and creating new all-time marks in the triple jump. The impressive numbers saw Amelia Peterson receive a silver medal with a 12.06-meter jump and Allie Scott place third (11.84); they moved to second and fifth, respectively, on WIU's indoor list.

"The men's 4x400 team did an amazing job," Wholey continued. "Lucas, Ackeen, Logan and Richard ran great legs on the relay to break the school record that has been standing since 1977! Thank you guys for representing us so well - the mid distance & distance crew had a busy weekend and we are grateful for Coach Hazouri and the efforts of this crew in doubling and tripling in events this weekend."

"Amelia Peterson and Allie Scott had great performances in the triple jump as well. The women jumpers are very passionate about the jumping events and are dedicated to their craft."
