Leathernecks Battle with No. 4 Louisville in Doubleheader Setback

Four student-athletes made their Leatherneck debuts on the opening weekend.

LOUISVILLE, KY. - After a historic win in the season opener at No. 4 Louisville (6-1), the Western Illinois baseball team (1-3) battled the powerhouse in both games of the doubleheader and dropped 1-4 and 4-9.

"The guys came out today and competed well again," head coach Andy Pascoe said. "We were not quite as clean defensively we needed to be to win against a good ball club. It was great to see that Our at-bats were good all weekend against a very good pitching staff - there were a lot of mature at-bats. I'm proud of how this team came to the field ready to play with a lot of energy and play hard."

On the opening weekend, four student-athletes - Derek Botaletto, Kory Olsen, Jacob Greenan, and Will Jaynes all made their Leatherneck debuts.

Game 1 | Western 1, Louisville 4

Alex Dorehty led the Leatherneck offense in the box and concluded the first game, 3-3 with singles and an RBI. The lefty drove in the lone run for WIU with a two-out knock down the right-field line in the eighth.

Making his Western debut in the starting lineup, Kory Olsen came around to score after a leadoff single started the top half. Jack Carberry relieved starter Jace Warkentien and struck out three in 2.0 innings of work.

One of the top offenses in the country, the Cards plated its first three runs off a sac fly, balk and solo shot. They added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth off a two-out double to even the series and take game one.

Game 2 | Western 4, Louisville 9

In the rubber match, the preseason ACC favorite nearly ran away with it as they jumped out a 7-0 lead through the first four innings, but the Leathernecks started to chip away and keyed in on two-out opportunities.

Led by Kevin Raisbeck (3-5) this time at the dish, three-straight singles from him, Trenton Bauer, and Botaletto brought home the first run in the fifth. Momentum continued at the plate in the next frame as a Dillon Sears single to center made it 2-8. Back-to-back bases-loaded walks from Bauer and Botaletto cut the lead in half, 4-8.
The late comeback was stopped as the Louisville bullpen shutout the Leathernecks in the final three frames.

Freshmen Jacob Greenan (1.0) and Will Jaynes (1.0) made their collegiate debuts out of the bullpen. Greenan's first career strikeout couldn't have come at a better time as it ended a two-out bases-loaded jam. Jaynes completed the seventh and fanned two batters. Both Bauer (8th) and Austin Edwards (9th) tossed perfect frames.

Western Illinois heads to Southern Illinois on Tuesday (March 2) for a midweek tilt, followed by a four-game weekend series at Evansville (March 5-7).
