Leathernecks and Roos Set for Weekend Series

Kickoff | Western Illinois continues league play against KC this weekend, both games have been moved to Quincy, Ill. 

COVID-19 Protocols | Per COVID-19 protocols, spectators for the weekend will only be limited to a player pass list for Western Illinois. 

Last Time Out | WIU made its first road trip of the season to NDSU and dropped each contest. 

In the series finale, Ten different Leathernecks recorded a shot en route to the season-high performance. Both sides combined for 35 total shots and three corners apiece. Freshman Maddie Hasken led the effort with a team-high four shots, followed by Jenna Lundgren with three. 
 
After both sides were deadlocked 0-0 into half, WIU nearly broke the scoreless game out of the gates in the second half with four consecutive shots and back-to-back on goal by Hasken and Lundgren. Newcomers Audrey Narine and Emma Brinkmann also had two shots each. 

Momentum From Last Season | Last year, Western Illinois won four straight matches for the first time since 2009. The streak was highlighted by back-to-back shutout victories to begin Summit League play en route to four total shutouts for seventh all-time in program history. The six wins also tied for ninth all-time. 

Debuts | Eight newcomers have made their Purple and Gold debuts, including Emma Brinkmann, Ella Kiely, Angie Knies, and Isabel Navas Rodriguez, who have started every game. Rookies Bailey Burlingham, Audrey Narine, and Maddie Asken have also earned a spot in the starting XI. 

Back of the Net | WIU returns 100 percent of their goal scorers from last season, led by Amy Andrews who had a team-leading six goals and wrote her name into the individual match-record for points (4) and goals (2) in a game vs. UIC. She now sits tied seventh all-time for game-winning goals with three.

Preseason Recognition | Defenders Lauryn Peters and Bridget Schuler were both named 2021 Summit League Preseason Players to Watch. The duo anchored four shutouts and started all 18 games and played all 1660 minutes last year. The pair have continued the tradition and have missed a minute so far this season. 

Series History | Despite trailing in the all-time series 3-5, the Leathernecks won the first-ever two matches in 2009 and 2010. Both teams met last season in KC, with the Roos winning 3-1. 

Scouting the Opposition | After seven years in the Western Athletic Conference, the Kansas City makes its return to The Summit League, of which it was a member from 1994-2013... last season, the Roos finished 13-4-4 and earned the third seed in the conference tournament and advanced to the semifinals for the seventh straight season.. the Roos enter with weekend league splits against South Dakota and North Dakota State.
