MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois women's basketball (6-15, 5-8) was red hot from beyond the arc on Friday night en route to taking down Denver (5-12, 3-6), 85-68.
After being down early in the opening period, WIU found momentum in a 11-2 run to take a 13-12 lead. Sam Pryor checked in and immediately gave WIU a spark with her three-point shooting. The guard ended the half with 18 points, going 6-7 from distance. Western outscored the Pioneers 25-10 in that second period and entered the break up 43-24.
In the third quarter, Denver got into a better rhythm and clawed back into the contest. Shooting 61.5% from the field, they outscored WIU 28-16 and cut the lead to 59-52 as the buzzer sounded. Once the final period got underway, however, Western got back into its groove. The Leathernecks succeeded on 14 paint points and gained several contributions on their way to a 85-68 win.
Elizabeth Lutz filled the stat sheet for the Leathernecks with a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds while adding five assists and six steals. Pryor ended the night with 21 points and seven out of ten makes from three-point land. Carla Flores and Grace Gilmore chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively. WIU made 16 total triples as a team - tied for eighth-highest in individual game records.
Tomorrow (Feb. 13), the Leathernecks will appear in Western Hall one final time this season. With Senior Day festivities taking place ahead of the series closer, game time is again set for 4:30 p.m.
