Western Closes Senior Day and Home Finale with Sweep

The Leathernecks earn the sweep over Denver, 90-82 on Saturday (Feb. 13) night.

MACOMB, Ill. -There was no better way to close out Grace Gilmore's final home game inside Western Hall as the Leathernecks defeated Denver (5-13, 3-7) 90-82 for the weekend sweep on Saturday (Feb. 13) night.

Prior to tip, Western Illinois (7-15, 6-8) honored Gilmore, who was starting her 82nd consecutive game and appearing in her 104th. The senior ended with 20 points and dished out five assists in her final game in Macomb.

Danni Nichols paced the Leatherneck attack out of the gates. The junior opened the contest with back-to-back baskets and two straight assists for an 11-3 lead (5:19). Elizabeth Lutz capped off the first quarter with a floater at the buzzer for a seven-point advantage (26-19).

The WIU offense clicked to start the second. An Evan Zars layup began a12-0 run for a 39-19 lead at the 6:53 mark. The three-ball continued in game two as Sam Pryor drilled two consecutive threes to maintain the double-digit cushion into half, 51-35.

Denver found their stride in the second half and outscored Western 24-19, but a Gilmore jumper kept the host out front (70-59) to end the third. The Pioneers continued the attack in the fourth, and a 10-0 run brought it to a one-possession game, 80-77 at 3:14.

Gilmore answered the visitor's push and made two big baskets late to maintain a two-point lead (84-82) at 1:09. Off an inbound, Nichols drew a foul and successful trips to the free-throw line from her and Gilmore fended off the comeback effort.

Nichols led all scorers with 24 points, and Zars recorded her league-leading eighth double-double (12 points and 13 rebounds). Carla Flores tied her career-high with seven assists as Pryor (12 points) came off the bench and finished in double-digits for the third consecutive game. WIU drilled double-digit (12) three-pointers for the sixth straight game.
