Leathernecks Draw with Eastern in Double-Overtime Season Opener

WIU and EIU played to a 1-1 tie in the Summit League opener on Friday (Feb. 12) night.

BURLINGTON, IOWA - The Western Illinois men's soccer team (0-0-1, 0-0-1) opened Summit League play in a double-overtime thriller against Eastern Illinois (0-1-1, 0-0-1) on Friday (Feb. 12) night as both sides played to a 1-1 draw.

A Summit League Preseason Player to Watch, Cesar Cosio (28') proved why in the season opener. The junior found the back of the net off an acrobat shot that was flicked along by Daisuke Otsuka and Michael Howell.

Sophomore Seanan Main earned his first career start in net and recorded 10 saves, highlighted by five in the second half.

Eastern Illinois scored in the 74th minute that set up overtime. Both sides had good looks in extra time, and back-to-back saves from Main in the 104th and 105th minute kept the game tied.

Freshman defender Mekhi Royes made his collegiate debut in the starting lineup, while newcomers Kory Soulinthavong and Muazu Sagir also made appearances.

Western Illinois heads to face the preseason poll favorite, Denver, on Feb. 18 and Feb. 20.
