Leatherneck Men’s Soccer Defeats St. Thomas

With goals by Luke Duball and Logan Lommel, the Leathernecks earned their first victory on the season.

MACOMB, ILL. – The Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck men's soccer team was in action on Saturday (Oct. 16), defeating the St. Thomas Tommies 2-1 on the Northwest Field on WIU's Macomb campus. Saturday's victory was the Leathernecks' first in Summit League play and first of the season.

St. Thomas got on the board first, scoring eight minutes in with a Charlie Holton goal. It was his second on the season and gave the Tommies a 1-0 lead.

A member of the starting eleven, Luke Duball evened the score less than seven minutes later, scoring in the 15th minute and evening the score at one apiece. The goal was Duball's first on the season and the third of his Leatherneck career.

Tied 1-1 at half, St. Thomas led the game in shots 7-5 and Western drew nine fouls, with both teams taking one corner kick.

The Leathernecks ramped up the pressure in the second half and their efforts were rewarded in the 82nd minute. After Cameron Territo played a ball into the box on a set piece near midfield, Kyle Owen won the aerial battle and flicked it on to Logan Lommel who, after a scramble in the box, was able to put it in the back of the net and give Western a one-goal lead. Lommel's goal held and the Leathernecks left as 2-1 victors.

"I'm very happy for our guys, they've been working very hard and put a good term performance in this afternoon," director of soccer Eric Johnson said after the game. "Getting our first win in a league game is a huge step towards the rest of the season."
