This Date in History: Leathernecks Deal Oral Roberts First Summit League Sweep

WIU handed the Golden Eagles its’ first-ever swept in league play.

On April 7, 2019, the Western Illinois baseball team stepped up to the plate to set a first in The Summit League with an 11-7 victory. The Leathernecks completed a three-game sweep over Oral Roberts, who were the four-time reigning league champions.

The three consecutive victories inside Alfred D. Boyer marked the first time the Golden Eagles, 18-time Summit champions, were swept in league play.

Drue Galassi finished the set batting .600 (9-for-15) with home runs in all three games and a team-high seven RBI. The junior outfielder pushed Western ahead 2-1 on his very first at-bat in the series finale – a towering shot over the right-field wall – to erupt a five-run first inning.

The series also began Kevin Raisbeck's on-base streak of 27 consecutive games, which tied for the longest streak since the 2017 season set by current graduate assistant coach Adam McGinnis.

The arms of Javin Drake, Jack Carberry, and Jace Warkentien all were solid on the mound as each chalked up a win while the trio combined 19 innings and 15 strikeouts while holding the top offense in the Summit to 11 runs.

WIU used the momentum to record the most single-season wins (22) in 12 years to go alongside the most Summit League victories ever (16) and clinching a spot in The Summit League Championships on the final day.
