Late Shots Not Enough

Palmiero Herera becomes fifth Leatherneck to record 200 saves

MACOMB, Ill. – Late shots in the second half weren't enough for the Western Illions (2-2-1) women's soccer team as they fell 1-0 against Northern Illinois (1-2-1) Sunday (Sept. 8) afternoon.

"Northern Illinois came out ready to play today; we started out a little flat but eventually got back into the game," assistant coach Josee Primeau said. "Unfortunately for us, they were the better team today. We can certainly learn from today and try to improve for our next match against Milwaukee next week."

With less than three minutes left in the match, Amy Andrews, Zoe Clarke and Jenna Lundgren all orchestrated a shot on goal but were saved by Julia Lentz. The Huskie goalkeeper saved seven Leatherneck chances.Ā Ā

The Huskies' scored the lone goal of the match at the 62-minute mark. Julia Neary made a move at the top of the box and let the ball loose to find the bottom right corner.Ā

Last time out, Ines Palmiero Herrera became fifth all-time in program history in saves. The senior experienced another career mark when she notched her 200 save in the 73rd minute, becoming only the fifth Leatherneck goalkeeper to do so.Ā

After being outshot in the first half 6-3, WIU fired 11 shots in the second half as both teams ended with 14 shots apiece.Ā

The Purple Gold now return to the road with matches against Milwaukee (Sept. 12) and Illinois State (Sept. 15).
