Andrews Finds The Way

The sophomore extinguished the Flames with a pair of goals

MACOMB, Ill. – Amy Andrews found a way for the Western Illinois (2-1-1) women' soccer team by scoring two goals in the Leathernecks' 2-1 victory over the UIC Flames on Thursday (Sept. 5).

"We were fortunate tonight to get an early lead against UIC." assistant coach Josee Primeau. "However, we almost gave it away when we allowed them to tie things up. Luckily our girls fought hard to find a game winning goal to solidify our victory."

Just before her scoring spree, Ines Palmiero Herrera stole the spotlight when the senior recorded career save number 192 to move to fifth all-time in program history. She stopped a total of seven UIC opportunities and sits at 20 saves on the 2019 campaign. Katherine Hill is currently fourth all-time in the program with 219.

"I'm so proud of this group of girls, I wouldn't be where I am without my team," Palmiero Herrera said. "I'm going to keep working as hard as I can to keep helping the team achieve our season goals and help improve the program."

After a UIC goal by Keri Birkenhead ('72) tied things at 1-1, Andrews got her final sip of tea on her team-leading third goal by cutting into the far left side of the box to bury the ball into the top right corner. The Leathernecks' 16th shot of the afternoon also marked the game-winning goal (84').
Emily Bollman was the last Leatherneck to score two goals in a match, and did so against Chicago State in 2017. On Thursday, the senior helped Andrews earn that mark.

At the 38th minute, Bollman found the sophomore just inside the top of the box and Andrews one-timed it into the bottom right corner to give WIU a 1-0 lead.

Western came out of the gate swinging as Natalie Nagle and Zoe Clarke each fired two shots to help the Leathernecks outshoot the Flames 10-7 in the first half.

The Purple and Gold aim to stay undefeated at home in a Sunday (Sept. 8) matinee against Northern Illinois at 1 p.m.
