Penalty Kicks Make a Difference at Kansas City

Gomes connects on her first career goal as a Leatherneck

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Carolina Gomes guided the Western Illinois (1-1-1) women's team off to a great start against Kansas City (4-0-0), but the Roos took advantage of two penalty kicks in the second half to complete the 3-1 victory on Sunday (Sept. 1).

"Playing away in the second game of the weekend is always difficult and Kansas City came out ready to play," assistant coach Josee Primeau said. "Our game plan worked well in the first half as we were able to get an early lead and our girls kept that momentum going into the second half. However, giving up two PKs to Kansas City along with a well-earned goal allowed this game to slip through our fingers. We will use this game to help better prepare for next weekend's games back home."

The Leathernecks pounced on the undefeated Roos first. After a Kansas City foul, Lauryn Peters placed a perfect ball off the free-kick to Gomes (18') who brought it down and one-timed into the net for her first career goal as a Leatherneck.

Kansas City made it a 1-1 game when All-American Rylan Childrens converted successfully on a penalty kick at the 53-minute mark. Then after the Roos took the lead 2-1 by Lindsey Prokop (65'), they took advantage of another PK and stretched the score to 3-1.

Maddie Wilsey and Emily Bollman nearly made it a one-goal game late in the second half, but neither shots could find the back of the net.

Goalkeeper Ines Palmiero Herrera continued to edge closer to become fifth all-time in career saves for WIU. The senior stopped five Kansas City shots and now sits at 190 saves, only needing one to tie the record set by Carey Cowhey (2002-05).

The Leathernecks turn the page and host two straight home matches with UIC on Thursday (Sept. 5) at 4 p.m. and Sunday (Sept. 8) at 1 p.m. against Northern Illinois.
