Kick-Off | After opening up the regular season in the win column, the Western Illinois (1-0-0) women's soccer team hits the road for weekend battles against IUPUI (1-1-0) on Friday (Aug. 30) and Kansas City (2-0-0) Sunday (Sept. 1).

Last Time Out: After an early Missouri State goal, Amy Andrews and Bridget Schuler responded with a pair of goals in the top right corner to win the regular-season opener 2-1.

Quickly into the campaign for both teams, Anna Durnin (3') gave the Bears a 1-0 advantage on the first shot of the match, but the backline and Ines Palmiero Herrera limited them to just four more total shots with two saves.

Western responded to Missouri State when Natalie Nagle and Cassidy Grunewald linked up on quick passes to find Andrews who buried it in the top right corner to tie it 1-1 at the 24-minute mark.

The Purple and Gold threatened early into the second half. Schuler (63') found a bouncing ball inside the box and one-timed beating the Bears keeper upper 90.

Scouting the Jaguars |  IUPUI hosts the Leathernecks with a 1-1 record on the season with a victory over Toledo in the season opener followed by a 4-1 loss to Butler. The 2017 Horizon Goalkeeper of the Year Sophia Lipka is a vital part of 10 starters returning from last season including their top four goal scorers. Head Coach Chris Johnson, the program's all-time leader in wins (114) enters his 17 season leading the Jaguars as they were picked to finish fourth in the Horizon preseason poll.

Scouting the Roos | Before hosting the Leathernecks, Kansas City takes on Eastern Illinois. The back-to-back Western Athletic Conference regular-season champions posted two shutout wins over Indiana State (1-0) and Illinois State (2-0) to begin the 2019 campaign. The Roos return eight starters highlighted by All-American Rylan Childres who set the record for single-season assists (14) and points (36). This year is the final year as competitors in the WAC before joining the Summit League during the 2020-21 academic year and will be eligible for conference championships immediately.

Between the Pipes |  Senior goalkeeper Ines Palmiero Herrera has continued to climb the ranks in the record book. Last season she led the Summit League with 93 saves en route to setting the individual season record for eighth all-time and tenth for minutes in goal (1487:55).  After recording two saves in the season opener victory against Missouri State, Palmiero Herrera sits sixth all-time in saves (179), saves per game (4.66) and fourth for minutes in goal (2987:28).

Primeau's Pregame Quote |  "It was disappointing to give up such an early goal last time out, but I thought the girls responded well," assistant coach Josee Primeau said. "The goal served as an unwelcome wake-up call, and instead of putting their heads down, they fought relentlessly to overcome the deficit in order to get three points in front of our home fans. That being said, nothing comes easy away from home, and we will have to be ready to get after it from the opening whistle. IUPUI is a solid side, in a very good Horizon League, so we are expecting a battle on Friday night. We need to stick to what we've been doing well and quickly adjust to the speed of play that the turf will generate to be successful. Kansas City is coming off a fantastic 2018 campaign, and playing them there will be an exciting test for the girls. Two games in three days, separated by 480 miles isn't going to be easy, but we are up for the challenge and look forward to getting better each and every time we take the field."

All Eyes On Yakima |  Heading into her junior season, Lauryn Peters was named a Summit League Player to Watch. She has notched back-to-back seasons with at least one goal and two assists. Last season, Peters started all 18 matches and finished tied for first on the team with 14 shots on goal. The Yakima, Wash., native has logged over 2,400 minutes in just two seasons and has appeared in all 34 games with 30 starts. Peters recorded a shot in nearly every match but six and ended the 2018 season tied for second in assists (2) and shots (28). She also takes the pitch alongside her high school teammate and current captain Natalie Nagle

Up Next |  After returning from the road, the Leathernecks host two straight home games starting with UIC on Thursday (Sept. 4) and Northern Illinois Sunday (Sept. 8).
