The Leathernecks totaled 45 shots, with 23 in the first half and 22 in the second

MACOMB, Ill. –The goals were plenty for the Western Illinois women's soccer team as it shutout the Southeastern Blackhawks, 5-0, in its exhibition opener on Wednesday (August 14).Ā

"I thought the rhythm of play was good in terms of our passing sequences. I thought our running off the ball was pretty good," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "No matter what you have to find a way to put the ball in the net, and we found a way to do that late in the game."Ā

The Leathernecks totaled 45 shots, with
23 in the first half and 22 in the second.

Ā Sophomore Amy Andrews found the back of the net first with a goal at the 10:23 mark. Then just over 10 minutes later Madison Bulin made it a 2-0 advantage with 22 minutes to go.

Ines Palmiero Herrera held the Blackhawks scoreless for the first 45 minutes in the net, followed by Megan Rasmussen and Lilly Doneghue who teamed up to preserve the shutout.Ā

Additional goals were scored by Cassidy Grunewald (76') and Lauryn Peters (79'), before Jenna Lundgren sealed the victory for WIU by placing the ball in the far left corner of the net at 82-minute mark.

"The opportunity to play the game against an opponent is really good for the team. It was a good experience for the group, and now we get to look at some film to see what kind of mileage our midfielders put in and get ready for Friday."Ā

The Leathernecks will wrap up exhibition play against Quincy on Friday (August 16), before diving into the regular season by hosting Missouri State (August 23).Ā
