Drake, Schaeffer Voted All-Academic

Javin Drake and CJ Schaeffer Jr. doubled down on Summit League postseason awards with selections to the all-academic team.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. –  On the diamond and in the classroom. First Team All-Summit League and All-Academic. Congratulations, Javin Drake and CJ Schaeffer Jr. 

The Western Illinois baseball team enjoyed a stellar 2019 slate that included single-season milestones like the most wins (22) in 12 years as well as the most Summit League victories ever (16), and the student-athletes above were highly instrumental in those successes. 

At the season's end, Drake and Schaeffer Jr. garnered their first-career first-team awards and added all-academic honors Wednesday (June 12) with the announcement of the 10-man list.

For much of the 2019 season, Schaeffer saw his named listed amongst the best catchers in all of Division I baseball on the 2019 Buster Posey Award Watch List. 

The finance major graduated with season's best in several categories: batting average (.283), hits (51), doubles (10), home runs (4), RBI (35) and runs (24), while also guiding the Summit League in runners caught stealing (21). He recorded his first career grand slam, walk-off style in a 10-6 victory over South Dakota State and added two other game winners at Southeast Missouri and Saint Louis.

A three-time SL Player of the Week honoree, with one of the highest grade point averages on the team, Western's right-handed pitcher managed a busy junior slate. 

Drake is pursuing a degree in physical education, and also set the Leathernecks' single-season strikeout record at 109, which ranked second in the SL and 42nd in the nation. His 2019 highlights also included back-to-back complete games --- both wins, one a shutout --- en route to a 7-6 record. He saw 103 innings in 17 appearances and finished with a 4.37 ERA.
