Joris Set to Compete at USA National Championships

The Leathernecks’ new assistant volleyball coach is still competing at a high level.

MACOMB, Ill. Elisa Joris plans to lead by example. The former All-American was recently named an assistant volleyball coach at Western Illinois University and continues to blaze her path on the court with an invite to play at the 2019 USA Volleyball Open National Championships.

Joris has suited up as a member of the adult national's team for 10 years and will display her talents at the upcoming championships May 24-29 in Columbus, Ohio.

"We're a part of Team Pineapple which is the men's team. They wanted to sponsor a women's team, so they went and hand-selected people to play on that," said Joris. "We've played in a couple of tournaments, our women just finished third at the Lloy Ball Classic, and the men actually won the tournament."

That competitive nature can only fuel the Leathernecks.

"I love it because I can get in the gym, and I'll never put one of my players through something that I wouldn't have been able to do myself."

Joris is a former letter winner at Grand Valley State where she assisted the program to NCAA Elite Eight and Final Four appearances, before transferring to Wayne State. She led the NCAA with 168 blocks in the 2005 season, the most by a WSU player in nearly a decade, and finished her two-year career ranked seventh in block solos (79), and eighth in both block assists (236) and total blocks (315).

In Joris, Western Illinois is also welcoming a 2012 Wayne State Hall of Fame inductee.

The USA event will take place inside the Greater Columbus Convention Center, and a few weeks later, Joris returns to Macomb to provide instruction at the Leatherneck volleyball camps: a youth camp (July 9-10), skills camp (July 10-12) and team camp (July 13-14).
