Leathernecks Make History in PFW Victory

The Leathernecks defeated PFW, 4-1, to record their 15th Summit League win of the season.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – In a 4-1 decision at Purdue Fort Wayne Friday (May 17), the Western Illinois baseball team posted its 15th Summit League win - the most ever in program history.  Dating back to 1985, Western had previously recorded no more than 14 league wins in a single season, which was a feat last accomplished a year ago.

The Friday finish also captured Javin Drake's third straight win and Connor Rektorki's second career save. Battling back from injury, Rektorski overcame a 2018 season where he only pitched 2.1 innings. The redshirt sophomore has twice as many appearances this year and recently earned his first career win behind a career-high 4.0 frames at Omaha.

"I'm really happy for Rekto," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "He is the ultimate team guy.  He looks like he is back to form from freshman year, and is a great example of big body language when he takes the mound."

With Western's first hit of the afternoon, Kevin Raisbeck extended his reached base streak to 24 consecutive games. The Leatherneck newcomer singled to left center field to bring in Bailey Montgomery for the 1-0 lead and added his second RBI on a fielder's choice in the fifth.

Western Illinois held a 4-0 edge through the middle of the seventh and didn't give up much when the Mastodons knocked on the door with one out and the bases loaded. A walk brought in the team's lone run, and the inning marked Javin Drake's last on the mound. He pitched seven full frames with a run, five hits, and four strikeouts, and the latter tally brought his 2019 total up to 105, the second most in a single-season behind Dustin Hunter's 106 (2012).

A positive result in the Saturday finale, which is also the Leathernecks' regular-season finale, would cement its third consecutive Summit League series win. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
