Leathernecks Rally But Fall Short in NDSU Doubleheader

The Leathernecks looked to claim the series with a furious comeback in the finale.

FARGO, N.D. - The Western Illinois baseball team looked to carry the successes of its series opener into Saturday's doubleheader but fell to North Dakota State by scores of 7-1 and 8-7.

Game two featured a fierce rally, with the Leathernecks outscoring NDSU, 5-0, down the stretch.

North Dakota State 7, Western Illinois 1

Max Loven retired six straight to start the game as Western struggled early to figure out the left-handed pitcher. Loven went all nine innings, yielding five hits, and Bailey Montgomery delivered the first on a leadoff double in the third.

The Leathernecks tied the game at 1-1 by the middle of the frame, but couldn't generate any additional scores as Loven pitched six innings without allowing a base runner.

Diego Munoz went 2-for-3 on the day with his 11th career RBI.

North Dakota State 8, Western Illinois 7

Continuing in on the theme set in game one of the series, the Leathernecks struck first as Kevin Raisbeck led things off with a double down the right-field line. He came home two at-bats later on an RBI single by Alex Dorethy, but the middle of the fifth inning, the Bison held a narrow 7-6 edge in hits and a 6-2 advantage on the scoreboard.

Back-to-back walks helped NDSU load the bases in the fifth inning where it scored two more, but Western responded in the seventh as Drue Galassi singled up the middle to bring in Munoz, and the first of three straight walks put a Leatherneck at each base. Steve McShane and Grant Hannant received RBIs on the plays before a wild pitch led to the fourth run of the frame.

WIU continued to apply pressure in the next two innings and pulled within a run after a two-out single by Deion Thompson who led off the eighth with a double before following the act with an RBI-single in the ninth.

The Leathernecks return to play Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a Big Ten matchup at Iowa. The home/away set will see the Hawkeyes visit Alfred D. Boyer Stadium Tuesday, May 14, at noon.
