Schaeffer Goes Yard in SDSU Split

CJ Schaeffer Jr. homered three times on the day

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Western Illinois catcher CJ Schaeffer Jr. entered his senior campaign with two home runs to his name and has already doubled up on the effort. All four of his 2019 homers have been against South Dakota State, and three occurred in Saturday's (April 20) doubleheader where his team split decisions in an 11-9 setback and 7-6, 10-inning victory.

"It was an all-around team effort by everyone," the senior said. "We stayed together and never gave up on the game. I was just in the zone today. Everything felt in slow motion at the plate. I wasn't giving into pitcher's pitches and hitting their mistakes."

South Dakota State 11, Western Illinois 9

Drue Galassi had a hand in both of Western's early runs. He became the first to cross home plate when Alex Dorethy doubled down the right-field line in the first inning and later brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to center field.

At the end of the third, Western trailed 3-2, but South Dakota State pulled ahead with eight runs scattered over three innings. The home side held an 11-4 edge through six, as the top half of the frame saw Grant Hannant send his very first pitch to left field for a 2-RBI double.

Five of Western's eight hits went for extra bases, and persistence opened the door for CJ Schaeffer Jr.'s fourth and fifth career home runs. He cashed in on back-to-back walks (3-2 and 3-1) to start the seventh inning and added a 2-RBI shot in the eighth. Both went over the left field wall for Western's final runs of the game.

Schaeffer and Hannant's hot hands continued in the series finale where they provided their team a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning on a solo homer and 2-RBI single, respectively. The game sat tied at 3-all by the end of the inning and became interesting in the ninth as the Leathernecks trailed, 6-3.

Diego Munoz wanted in on the home run action and recorded the first of his collegiate career on a 2-RBI bomb. With no outs, Western suddenly saw itself within a run.

Drue Galassi and Schaeffer each reached on back-to-back singles, and there were two outs on the board when Steve McShane's infield single tied the game at 6-6.

Deion Thompson made his first appearance in the sixth inning and went 2-for-2, with his last hit crucial to the team's success. There was one away when he singled to left field, and took the next two bases on an error and failed pickoff attempt. Munoz recorded the game-winner on a sac fly and Dorethy closed the door with three strikeouts in SDSU's final plate appearance.

Dorethy picked up his first win of the season in the decision in two innings of action.

The Leathernecks will play host to SIUE Tuesday before hitting the road for a three-game set at North Dakota State (April 26-28).
