Cougars Claim Second Matchup

Both sought their 16th win of the season.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois and SIUE entered Tuesday's baseball game (April 23) with identical records, each seeking their 16th win, and it was the Cougars who claimed the final decision, 15-2. 

Momentum swung in SIUE's favor after a two-out grand slam in the fifth inning, but prior to the strike, the team was limited to just two runs and two hits. Jordan Cheek's time on the mound stretched four complete innings, and his team trailed 2-1 at the end of his second career start.  The early run came from Drue Galassi, whose 90th career RBI sits eight away from cracking the program's all-time list. 

The Leathernecks had an opportunity to pad a few runs with the bases full and no outs in the fifth inning, but the next three hitters were retired on strikeouts. 

Free bases ultimately became Western's downfall as the Cougars finished the game with a slight 7-5 edge in hits. 

With its next seven on the road, Western begins its road swing at North Dakota State this weekend. The series starts Friday at 6:30 p.m.
