Warkentien Has Career Day in Series-Opening Win

Jace Warkentien fanned a career-high 10 hitters while allowing a season-low four hits and two runs.

FARGO, N.D. –  Behind a career day from sophomore pitcher Jace Warkentien, the Western Illinois baseball team enjoyed a 7-2 series-opening win at North Dakota State Friday night (April 26). The lefty dealt a career-high 10 strikeouts in the decision as the Leathernecks pushed themselves above .500 in Summit League play with a record of 10-9.

Though the score sat knotted at 1-1 at the end of the first inning, Western never saw itself on the losing end of the score. CJ Schaeffer Jr. recorded the first two RBIs of the game on sacrifice flys before Alex Dorethy's 2 RBI single up the middle helped his team to a 4-1 edge in the fourth inning.

Warkentien went seven innings for the second time this season and surrendered the fewest hits (4) and runs (2) in a game started.

Due to expected inclement weather, the two teams will now play a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
