Hot Start Continues in SLU Sweep

Leathernecks off to best start in seven seasons.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Western Illinois' hot start continued Friday (March 8) as a doubleheader sweep over Saint Louis tied the baseball team's best record since 2012 where it opened the year 4-7.

The Leathernecks now have a pair of series wins under the belt and will go for the sweep Sunday at 12 p.m. Game one versus SLU captured a 3-0 victory – the first shutout of the season – before a two-out single by CJ Schaeffer Jr. helped Western to a 5-4 success in game two.

"I really can't do our guys justice with quotes. You needed to be there," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "It was a special day for our program.  Winning a doubleheader on the road is extremely difficult. A special outing from Javin [Drake],  it is so much fun to watch him pitch, and Jace [Warkentien] came in and closed both games.

"Our hitters are working extremely hard to get themselves going.  We did a much better job of manufacturing runs today.  SLU's pitching numbers were really good and the hitters answered the bell.  That is as good of pitching as we have seen in a while from top to bottom, a lot of different looks from their staff with really good command.  The defense was outstanding today with no errors.  We found a way to win both games and need to continue with our grind it out mentality.  That is who we need to be.  Early in the year, it is going to be tough to hit, and we still need to find ways to score, but the guys did a great job of that today.  The pitching staff in the second game did a good job of piecing it together.  We will have a good workout tomorrow and get ready for Sunday.  It is a great start to Spring Break."

Game 1: Western 3, Saint Louis 0

WIU scored all three of its runs in the first three innings, and Javin Drake put in work to sustain the advantage. The junior righty went eight frames – four without allowing a baserunner – and while also dealing a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Drue Galassi went 3-for-3 in the game and had a hand in both runs scored in the second inning. His bunt single brought in Steve McShane to push the score up 2-0 and he later scored on a passed ball.

Game 2: Western 5, Saint Louis 4

The Leathernecks held a 4-1 lead heading into the middle of the fourth inning until the Billikens evened the score with a 2-RBI triple and RBI-double.

Schaeffer lifted the deadlock in the eighth inning on a single up the middle and the play stamped the final score.

Jace Warkentien earned the save in both games, yielding no runs and no hits in 2.1 total innings. He also struck out five. Austin Emanuel picked up his first win of the season in 1.1 frames of scoreless play.
