Leathernecks Unable to Complete Sweep at SLU

WIU Baseball wasn't successful in the sweep but still recorded its second series win.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Western Illinois' baseball team fell short of the series sweep but claimed its second series win in a three-game set against Saint Louis. Sunday's (March 10) decision at Roy Lee Field saw the Leathernecks fall, 8-2.

For the third time in as many games, Western jumped out to an early lead – 1-0 by the middle of the third – but four runs scored in the home half of the inning put the Billikens ahead for good.

The Leathernecks struck first on a sac-bunt by Dillon Sears before threatening with bases loaded in the eighth. There were two outs and a runner at each square when Bailey Montgomery drew a walk, and a ground out on the next at-bat closed the inning.

Western left six runners on base, including two in scoring position in the sixth, and was outhit, 11-4.

Jace Warkentien had already notched a pair of saves against SLU, coming on in relief in the first two games, and persisted with another stellar effort on 3.1 innings in the finale. There were no runs scored during his appearance, and he yielded just three hits while striking out three.

Despite Sunday's decision, Western is still off to its hottest start in seven seasons with a record of 4-8. The team's Spring Break trip continues with two games at Arkansas (March 12-13). Game one is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and the second at 3 p.m.
