Galassi Homers Twice in SDSU Series Finale

Drue Galassi brought in all four runs in the Sunday rubber match.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Western Illinois baseball team homered in all three games of its Summit League opening weekend versus South Dakota State, and junior Drue Galassi notched a pair in the Sunday (March 17) series finale.

The junior outfielder brought in all four runs in Western's 7-4 setback to join Deion Thompson and CJ Schaeffer Jr. in going yard on the weekend. Thompson's 2-RBI shot pulled the Leathernecks within a run in the ninth inning of game one's 7-6 decision while Schaeffer's went down walk-off style for a grand slam in a 10-6 victory.

Western trailed the Jackrabbits, 6-0, going into the fifth inning of the rubber match -- just two of the runs earned – before Galassi cut the deficit in half.

"We can't strike out that much. On a Sunday you're supposed to put up numbers," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "The team that takes care of the baseball best is going to win. They had seven runs on five hits; we've got to be better on Sundays. We didn't play poorly, but just not good enough to win. We just needed to be better."

After a leadoff walk to start the game, Justin Foy retired six straight. A fielding error allowed the Jacks to put up a run in the third and the score sat 1-0 until the fifth frame.

Galassi homered in the home-half of the inning and added a solo shot in the seventh, both traveled over the right field wall, before Gus Steiger's leadoff home run set the final score in the ninth.

Foy received the loss in 4.2 innings. He yielded just two hits, with two earned runs, but six scored in his appearance. Alex Dorethy and Austin Emanuel came in on relief, and the latter went 3.1 innings with two hits and one run.

Western will take to Alfred D. Boyer Stadium for the first time in a Tuesday tilt against Iowa Wesleyan. The game is scheduled for 3 p.m.
