Leathernecks Rally to Beat Bowling Green; Fall to Georgia

Western Illinois has a 2-2 record so far at the UGA Classic.

ATHENS, Ga.- The Western Illinois softball team (6-9) settled for another split at the UGA Classic after rallying to defeat Bowling Green 4-3 before falling to No. 8 Georgia by a final score of 6-0.  
 
Game One (Western Illinois 4, Bowling Green 3)
 
The Leathernecks trailed 3-0 after five innings before they strung together a comeback in the top of the sixth. Sydney Hollings hooked her first home run of the season, a solo shot down the left field line to put Western on the board.
 
With two runners on, Danielle Olson laced a single down the first base line to plate Kyra Kroll. One batter later, Madison Boone grounded out as Ashley Minyard scored the tying run. Aly Compton boosted WIU ahead on a single to left field to bring home the go-ahead run Olson.
 
Payton Abbott (2-1) shut the door in the bottom of the seventh inning as she went the distance allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.  
 
Game Two (Georgia 6, Western Illinois 0)

Georgia head coach Lu Harris-Champer played at Western Illinois and was an assistant coach for WIU from 1992-1996.
 
Emily Ira (3-3) surrendered a two-run homer to Alyssa DiCarlo in the bottom of the first inning. The Bulldogs scored all six of their runs via the long ball as a two-run bomb and solo home run pushed the Georgia advantage to 5-0 after three innings.
 
DiCarlo became Georgia's all-time home run leader with a solo shot off Abby Carlin in the bottom of the fifth. Ira surrendered five runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout over 2.2 innings of work. Carlin threw the remaining 2.1 innings with one walk and one strikeout.
 
The Leathernecks conclude play at the UGA Classic against host Georgia on Monday, March 11 at 5 p.m. (CT).
